OEMs Including Harley-Davidson
and Honda Inflate Price of Inferior Lubes to Profit From Consumer
Assumptions of Quality
Original equipment manufacturers
(OEMs) typically recommend their own brands of motor oils
and lubricants for their equipment. Consumers believe those
"brand name" lubes are the best for the motorcycles,
snowmobiles, ATVs, outboard motors and other recreational
equipment they buy.
"Consumers often operate
under the premise that the manufacturer not only knows what's
best for the equipment but also provides the best," said
Dave Anderson, AMSOIL technical product manager. "Their
impression is that the OEM oils are always the best, and in
many cases nothing could be further from the truth."
Anderson has more than 25 years of experience at AMSOIL and
has conducted numerous comparison tests throughout that time.
Consumers falsely assume OEMs
actually manufacture the oils and lubes that carry their brand
name.
However, OEMs typically buy
low-cost and sometimes low-quality oils from lubricant manufacturers,
put their labels on them and send them out for distribution
at dealerships.
"Manufacturers can command
higher prices simply because the consumer perceives it to
be more appropriate for the application," Anderson said.
Contrary to consumers perception,
research indicates OEM lubes often aren't equal to the performance
quality of the cheapest aftermarket oils on store shelves.
"Manufacturers probably
do know more about the equipment," Anderson said. "If
indeed they know what's best for their product, their lubricants
should outperform - or at least meet the performance levels
of - the other products out there. But results show that in
most cases OEM oils were inferior to others."
Consumers are sometimes let
to believe that using any other oils or lubricants will void
their factory warranties.
The federal Magnuson-Moss Act
of 1975 was enacted to protect consumers. It says in part:
"No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his
written or implied warranty of such product on the consumer's
using, in connection with such product, any article or service
(other than article or service provided without charge under
the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade
or corporate name." - United States Code, Title 15, Chapter
50, Section 2302 (c).
4-Ball Wear Protection
Test (ASTM D-4172)
The ASTM
D-4172 4-Ball Wear Test determines an oil's ability to
minimize wear in case of metal-to-metal contact.
Four steel balls are placed
in the test oil with one held in place and rotated under a
prescibed load and temperature against the other three.
After a one-hour period of constant
load, speed and temperature, the lower three balls are inspected
at the point of contact. Wear appears as a single scar on
each of the balls. The lower the average scar diameter, the
better the wear protection of the oil.
AMSOIL
20W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil (MCV) offers significantly
better wear protection than competing OEM motorcycle oils.
The High
Temperature/High Shear Test measures an oil's viscosity
(thickness) at high temperatures under shearing forces. Shear
stable oils that are able to maintain high viscosity at high
temperatures perform well in the HTHS Test. The test combines
viscosity, shear stability and viscosity index. It's important
because bearings require the greatest level of protection
during high temperature operation. The higher the test result,
the greater the level of protection offered by the oil.
AMSOIL
20W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil significantly outperformed
competing OEM motorcycle oils in High Temperature/High Shear
Testing.
"In order for AMSOIL to
do our job properly, we have to have an intimate knowledge
of the products it's going to be used in," Anderson said.
"We focus on the lubrication needs. We know more about
how to meet those needs because that's our job. We make the
best motor oils and lubricants - that's what we do."
Why Harley-Davidson Owners Choose
AMSOIL
Wear
Test Comparison - AMSOIL vs Harley-Davidson Screamin' Eagle
Syn3 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil
The recent introduction of Screamin'
Eagle® Synthetic Lubricant by Harley-Davidson® indicates
the Motor Company has finally recognized the benefits of running
synthetic motorcycle oil in their air-cooled engines. After
years of advising dealers and customers to avoid using synthetic
oils in their bikes, it's natural to wonder why the company
is suddenly marketing one.
For the past 20 years, Harley-Davidson®
has claimed its petroleum-based Genuine H-D Oil is best for
the "unique requirements of Harley-Davidson® air-cooled
V-twin engines." However, laboratory testing has consistently
revealed that Genuine H-D Oil does not provide the best protection
possible for Harley-Davidson® engines. In fact, Four-Ball
Wear Tests show Harley- Davidson® 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil
leaves a wear scar nearly 80 percent larger than that left
by AMSOIL
Synthetic 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil.
One of the major benefits of
running a synthetic motorcycle oil is its resistance to oxidation
and thermal degradation, which inhibit the formation of sludge
and deposits that contribute to increased wear. In the past,
Harley-Davidson® has defended use of its Genuine H-D Oil
by arguing that oil breakdown in extreme heat is a non-issue
because extreme heat conditions are not normally faced by
motorcycle engines, while the superior cold-temperature benefits
of synthetics also don't apply to Harleys.
The fact is, engine oil in Harley-Davidson®
motorcycles is subject to very high temperatures. Being air-cooled,
Harley-Davidson® engines get especially hot while idling
in traffic, commonly reaching temperatures up to 240 degrees
Fahrenheit. As heat and oxidation increase, so does viscosity,
adversely affecting the lubricating qualities of the oil and
increasing wear.
The water, soot and acid byproducts
of combustion also contribute to deposit formation. Harley-Davidson®
has stressed the importance of regular oil changes in order
to remove these contaminants. Of course, promoting regular
oil changes is also a good way to promote using petroleum-based
Genuine H-D Oil. High-quality synthetic oils formulated with
high-performance additives effectively withstand such contaminants,
allowing motorcyclists to safely extend drain intervals.
In support of their about-face
and the introduction of a synthetic oil, Harley maintains
that "the Motor Company has never supported the use of
synthetic products in our vehicles because there has never
been any test validations completed on the numerous formulations
in HD/Buell motorcycles. This product has been exclusively
designed for Harley-Davidson® and is the only synthetic
product TESTED and CERTIFIED by Harley-Davidson® engineering
for use in HD/Buell motorcycles."
Although this is necessary marketing
hype, Harley-Davidson®
V-twin air-cooled engines are not unique in their lubrication
requirements and do not require a special Harley-only fluid
(see
letter from Harley-Davidson). There is nothing
about Screamin' Eagle® Synthetic Motorcycle Oil that sets
it apart from, or makes it better than, many other synthetic
motorcycle oil formulations, except that Harley-Davidson®
is marketing it and directly profiting from the sales.
According to Harley-Davidson®,
one of the unique benefits offered by Screamin' Eagle®
Synthetic Motorcycle Oil is its versatility. For the first
time the company is recommending an oil that can be used in
the engines, primary chaincases and transmissions of most
Harley-Davidson® motorcycles, including Evolution XL,
Evolution 1340, Twin Cam 88 and 88B, Twin Cam 96, Revolution
and Buell models. This feature, however, is not unique. AMSOIL
20W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil may also be used in the engines,
primary chaincases and transmissions of these applications,
providing superior lubricating protection in each component.
How does Screamin' Eagle®
Synthetic Motorcycle Oil measure up to AMSOIL in wear protection?
Four-Ball Wear Test results indicate that AMSOIL Synthetic
Motorcycle Oil still provides the best protection possible
for motorcycles. In fact, Screamin' Eagle® Synthetic Motorcycle
Oil leaves a wear scar nearly 80 percent larger than AMSOIL
20W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil.
Not only does AMSOIL Synthetic
Motorcycle Oil offer greater wear protection than Screamin'
Eagle® Synthetic Motorcycle Oil, it also delivers greater
value. Because AMSOIL
Synthetic Motorcycle Oil may be used for extended drain
intervals of up to twice the manufacturer's suggested interval,
while Screamin' Eagle® is recommended for standard drain
intervals, AMSOIL customers realize additional savings.
Harley-Davidson® claims
Screamin' Eagle® Synthetic Motorcycle Oil has been "exclusively
designed" for use in their motorcycles, pointing to extensive
bench testing and over 230,000 miles of durability testing
to back it up. AMSOIL INC. has over 35 years of experience
providing superior lubricating protection for all brands of
motorcycles, and AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oils have been
tested in millions of over-the-road miles. Testimonials from
countless motorcyclists further demonstrate the superiority
of AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oils.
Formulated with top-of-the-line
synthetic base stocks and high-temperature deposit control
additives, AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oils provide superior
protection and performance for motorcycles in all operating
conditions. AMSOIL Motorcycle Oils effectively withstand oxidation
and thermal degradation, keep wear to an absolute minimum,
hold contaminants in suspension and keep engines running cool
and clean.

AMSOIL Motocycle Oil for Harley-Davidson
A situation my daughter, Lyn,
told me about recently got me to thinking about how good it
is to be able to blend our own oils and have complete control
of our own product quality.
Lyn loves to ride motorcycles.
She recently purchased a Harley-Davidson bike and took it
to the local Harley shop to have our new AMSOIL Motorcycle
Oil installed. The mechanic took issue with her not using
the oil Harley-Davidson sells, saying, "I'll use AMSOIL
motor oil when AMSOIL starts making motorcycles!"
How would you answer a challenge
like that? I was pleased to hear Lyn's response. She said,
"I'll start using Harley-Davidson motor oil when Harley
starts making oil!"
Perfect! The fact is that Harley-Davidson,
like so many other "brands" of oil, contract with
one or more oil companies to make their lubricants. Often,
the decision as to who actually makes a private labeled product
is based on low bid, and like almost everything manufactured
by a low bidder, short cuts are taken in order to meet the
low price.
I understand that Harley-Davidson
has contracted with one company for a number of years to make
their oil. That's good, but it doesn't change the fact that
they make motorcycles, not oil. Now consider all the other
private label oils out there. Every manufacturer that makes
equipment with an engine has its own name on an oil bottle.
That includes all the major auto manufacturers, the makers
of motorcycles, ATV's, snowmobiles, lawnmowers, farm equipment,
you name it, they all have oils. But none of these equipment
manufacturers actually make an oil. They sell oil to make
more money, and they often price these oils well above the
going rate for competitive lubricants because, like Harley-Davidson,
they can specify or create the impression that only their
oil be used in their equipment.
Now there's nothing wrong in
having a goal to make money, but let's get real here. Why
would anyone want to use a product manufactured down to a
price rather than a product manufactured up to high quality
standards? We have tested a number of these private label
motor oils and two-cycle oils and we found many are mediocre
quality products. None of them even comes close to performing
as well as AMSOIL lubricants, and that's a fact!
I'm not taking shots at Harley-Davidson.
They make good motorcycles (although I liked my Goldwing better).
And I understand their concern that normal automotive oils
not meeting API C specs shouldn't be used in their bikes.
But when they imply that AMSOIL Motorcycle Oil is not as good
as their brand or I hear that one of their dealers recommended
not using AMSOIL, I get a little hostile. Thise kinds of statements
are the very reason we introduced our motorcycle oils in the
first place. And when we say use our 20W-50 motorcycle oil
in V-Twin motorcycle engines, that definately includes Harley-Davidson
motorcycles!
Our Motorcycle
Products Brochure, G-391, includes wear comparisons
of AMSOIL Motorcycle Oils vs other oils, including H-D "Genuine."
Both our oils demonstrate superior wear protection over all
other tested brands. Interestingly enough, the highest wear
scar in this test turned out to be Harley-Davidson's own "Genuine"
oil!"
There is a good reason why AMSOIL
Motorcycle Oils protect so well against wear. They are
formulated with significantly higher levels of zinc and phosphorus,
which when included in proper formulation with other high
quality additives, provide superior wear protection at the
high operating temperatures typical of motorcycles. In addition,
synthetic oils inherently reduce sump temperatures so the
engines actually run cooler.
The fact is, Harley would do
well to have AMSOIL make their oils for them. Then they could
be assured that their oil was indeed a superior product. As
it is, there may be absolutely nothing wrong with their oil
for use in average service, but I guarantee you that as the
oil temperature gets hotter, like it does when sitting in
traffic on asphalt on a hot summer day, the Harley-Davidson
with AMSOIL in the crankcase is going to be far better protected
and run far cooler than the bike with H-D "Genuine"
oil in it. There's just no two ways about it!
So, my daughter Lyn will be
going back to this mechanic armed with the facts about AMSOIL
Motorcycle Oils and a few facts about H-D oil. Nobody's
going to tell her that her dad's oils are not the very best.
She knows better, and she's on a mission to prove her point.
Who knows? Knowing Lyn, she might sign up another AMSOIL Dealer
in the process!

Provides Extreme Pressure Quality
Protection for Gears
With AMSOIL MCV, there is no need for
separate transmission or primary chaincase lubricants. It
is absolutely shear stable and will not thin out from mechanical
activity. AMSOIL MCV performs like a gear lube without the
negative effects of extreme pressure additives. In the FZG
gear test, AMSOIL MCV achieved a perfect score with a “zero”
wear rating (see photos below).

Delivers Superior Rust Protection
Motorcycles are prone to rust from
storage, humidity and short drives. Rust can cause major damage
such as roller bearing failure, uncontrolled wear, compression
loss and blow-by. Good rust protection, however, comes by
design and is not natural to engine oils. Unlike many motorcycle
oils, AMSOIL MCV contains special anti-rust agents. It passes
the ASTM D-1748 humidity cabinet rust test and clearly demonstrates
superior rust protection (see photos below).

Provides Excellent Wet Clutch
Performance
AMSOIL MCV contains no friction modifiers
and promotes smooth shifting and positive clutch engagement.
AMSOIL MCV controls heat and prevents slippage and glazing,
and its high TBN resists acids that can degrade clutch material,
helping improve clutch life.
Applications
AMSOIL
Synthetic 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil is recommended for air
or liquid cooled 4-stroke engines. It meets SAE 90, API GL-1
gear oil requirements and is recommended for transmissions
and primary chaincases. AMSOIL MCV is recommended for Harley
Davidson®,
Buell®, Victory®, Ducati®, Aprilia®, BMW®,
Triumph® and other motorcycles where 15W-50 or 20W-50
engine oils or SAE 90, GL-1 gear oils are used. Not recommended
for shaft drive hypoid gears or where an API GL-4 or GL-5
gear oil is required.
MIXING AMSOIL
AMSOIL
Synthetic 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil is compatible with conventional
and synthetic motor oils; however, mixing oils may shorten
the oil life expectancy and reduce the performance benefits.
AMSOIL does not support extended drain intervals where oils
have been mixed.
Aftermarket oil additives are
not recommended for use with AMSOIL motorcycle oil.

The AMSOIL Advantage
Motorcycle manufacturers want the best
protection possible for their equipment, calling for rugged
oils that exhibit high-temperature deposit control additives.
AMSOIL
Synthetic Motorcycle Oils are specially formulated with
the best synthetic basestocks and high-performance additives
to provide tough lubricating protection for all four-cycle
motorcycle and ATV engines in the most demanding operations.
AMSOIL
Motorcycle Oils are formulated for both water-cooled engines
and the unique demands presented by air-cooled V-twin motorcyle
engines, including Harley-Davidson. Conventional petroleum
oils break down and oxidize when faced with high temperatures,
such as those experienced when idling in traffic, contributing
to the formation of deposits, sludge and varnish. AMSOIL withstands
oil breakdown and oxidation in high temperatures, holds contaminants
in suspension and keeps engines running cool and clean.
Zinc and phosphorus
additives are extremely important to engines faced with high-pressure
conditions, especially motorcycle engines, which typically
have steep cam slopes, creating high pressure between the
parts. In motorcycles, friction modifiers (prevalent in automotive
oils) have been attributed to engine start failures, a rough
running feel, increased fuel consumption due to higher engine
stall speeds and other problems. AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-40
and 20W-50
Motorcycle Oils have beefier antiwear and detergent/dispersant
packages with no friction modifiers, keeping motorcycles running
smoothly and efficiently, while allowing for extended drain
intervals of up to twice the manufacturers' recommendations.
AMSOIL
Synthetic Motorcycle Oils contain significantly higher
levels of zinc and phosphorus than competing oils, and while
simply adding more zinc and phosphorus doesn't insure good
performance, AMSOIL has formulated motorcycle oils with the
best additives in the optimal quantities to provide superior
wear protection.
A Four-Ball Wear
Test was conducted at 302°F/150°C, a higher temperature
that would typically be associated with motorcycle oil operating
temperatures in extreme high-performance situations. AMSOIL
Motorcycle Oils protect better in higher temperatures
than any of the tested motorcycle oils do, leaving a wear
scar up to 80 percent smaller.

Dear AMSOIL,
I wanted to let you know how
happy I am with your AMSOIL
20W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil. I own a 2006 Harley-Davidson
Sportster with 5,000 miles on it. Since the bike was new I've
only used Harley-Davidson oil in the engine and Sportster
gear lube in the transmission and primary chaincase.
After reading your "Study
of Motorcycle Oils" I decided to switch
to AMSOIL. That was the best thing I've ever done for my Harley-Davidson.
From day one I have had problems
down-shifting, especially when the bike was cold. It would
hang up between gears and I couldn't get it free before the
light at the signal turned green. Very dangerous.
Harley-Davidson told me it was
not broken in yet and to stop "granny shifting."
After 5,000 miles it was still
doing it. Now, after I started using AMSOIL in my engine and
transmission, the problem has ceased completely from the minute
I put it in. No matter how easy I down-shift I can't make
it hang up between gears.
Thank you so much for your incredible
oil. I'll never use any other brand again.

FULL
WARRANTY
AMSOIL
synthetic motor oils are formulated to surpass engine test
specifications, offering protection far greater than competing
motor oils for extended drain intervals. Most synthetic oil
manufacturers make no claim to extended drain intervals, deferring
to the maintenance schedule provided by the vehicle manufacturer.
With its unparalleled oil and warranty program, AMSOIL offers
consumers unprecedented protection and economics.
Another
AMSOIL First
More than 20 years
ago, AMSOIL began using the NOACK volatility test as a comparison
tool and measurement of quality. Back then, nearly every oil
tested side-by-side with AMSOIL synthetic motor oils failed,
and those that passed barely squeaked by. Other oil companies
paid no attention to NOACK results until Ford Motor Company
made it a requirement for service fill oils, validating what
AMSOIL had said all along.
THE
NOACK Volatility Test
The NOACK
Volatility Test determines the evaporation loss
of lubricants in high temperature service. The more
motor oils vaporize, the thicker and heavier they become,
contributing to poor circulation, reduced fuel economy
and increased oil consumption, wear and emissions. AMSOIL
Synthetic Motor Oil resists high temperature volatization
better than other motor oils. AMSOIL Synthetic Motor
Oil maintains peak fuel efficiency and reduces oil consumption
and emissions. |
